Test Format
  • Multiple Choice questions
  • Numerical response questions
  • Written response questions
Study tips:
- rewrite your notes. It helps to retain information
- memorize content, say terms and processes loud

- explain processes to yourself or someone else
- study with diagrams from the textbook, look at them and analyze them
5.1 Matter and Energy Pathways in Living Systems
  • Explain and label the structure and function of chloroplasts and mitochondria
  • Explain metabolic pathways (anabolic and catabolic), define the term metabolism
  • Describe the difference between oxidation and reduction
  • Explain the purpose of ATP
  • Understand the formula of photosynthesis and cellular respiration

5.2  Photosynthesis Stores Energy in Organic Compounds
  • Define the terms pigment, photosynthetic pigment
  • Explain why leafs appear green
  • Interpret an absorbance spectrum and action spectrum graph
  • Explain the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis
  • Explain the purpose of an electron transport system (chemiosmosis)
  • Describe what is a photosystem
  • Explain the three stages of the light-independent reaction of photosynthesis (calvin-benson cycle)

5.3 Cellular Respiration Releases Energy from Organic Compounds
  • Explain the three pathways for Energy release (aerobic, anerobic and fermentation)
  • Explain Glycolysis, the Krebs cycle preparation and the Krebs Cycle
  • Explain the Electron Transport system
  • Explain the Role of Oxygen in aerobic cellular respiration (p.188) - final electron acceptor
  • Explain which of the three phases produces the greatest amount of ATP
  • You need to know how much ATP, NADH & FADH is produced after each process
  • Explain the purpose of NADH and FADH2 in the electron transport system
  • How much ATP is produced during the Electron transport system? How does it work?
  • Explain under what conditions does fermentation occur
  • Describe how lactate fermentation is similar to and different from ethanol fermentation (give examples for both fermentation types)
