Chapter 3-4 Test on Thursday January 9th

Please keep in mind to be critical when studying the evolution content. Don't just memorize the definitions, and study them as facts. Be able to critically reflect on the theory of evolution and compare with Islamic facts about creation (as studied in class.)

Chapter 3.1 Individuals, Populations and Communities in Ecosystems

  • define and explain the interrelationship among individual organisms, populations, communities and ecosystems
  • Give examples of biotic and abiotic factors
  • list different types of ecosystems 


Chapter 3.2 Classifying and Naming Organisms

  • define the term taxonomy
  • list and explain the difference between the six kingdoms of life (archaea, Bacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia)
  • explain how organisms are classified in domains 
  • list the levels of classification in the correct order (domain, kingdom, phylum, class.....)
  • explain how a scientific name is created including the correct writing of
  • explain abiotic and biotic limiting factors


Chapter 4.1 Adaptation, Variation and Natural Selection

  • define and differentiate using examples the terms adaptation and variation, 
  • explain using examples what is natural selection

Chapter 4.2 Developing a Theory to Explain Change

  • Explain how Cuvier, Buffon and Lamarck explained evolution
  • Compare Lamarck's and Darwin' s theory using an example
  • List and explain Darwins two main ideas how species changed over time
  • Describe how scientist provide evidence for evolution (fossil record, transitional fossils, patterns of distribution and anatomy)
  • Critically reflect these evidences 
  • Differentiate between homologous and analogous structures
  • Explain how scientist try to describe how species are formed
